Abstract
The Census o f 2011 estimates that 833million people currently live in rural India. They depend for their
livelihood largely on crop and animal husbandry, fisheries, and Agro-forestry. In spite o f aU Government programmes
in the area o f social safety nets, 26 crores o f people still live below poverty line. MGNREGA provides for the
enhancement o f livelihood security o f the households in rural areas o f the country by providing at least one hundred
days o f guaranteed wage employment in a year. The programme will have signilicant positive impact on seasonal
rural-urban migration by providing rural workers with employment during lean season. This will reduce problem o f
excessive population pressure in villages. Before MGNREGA, these tribal villages had no option but to move Ifom
place to place during off-agricultural season. But with the employment Guarantee Scheme in place, they have a source
o f livelihood during drought and lean season. This paper focuses on the impact o f MGNREGA on the enhancement o f
economic and livelihood security among women.
