ANTICANCER ACTIVITY OF METHANOLIC AND AQUEOUS EXTRACT OF ULVA FASCIATA IN ALBINO MICE
    (2012) Kowsalya, S
Seaweeds are primitive non flowering aquatic plants, which have been a source of food, feed and medicine since ancient times. The selected green seaweed U.fasciata collected from Gulf of Mannar Is a unique marine habitat that belongs to the diverse class of seaweeds. Hence the present study was conducted with the specific objectives to explore the anticancer activity of green seaweed, Ulva fasciata. The anticancer activity was tested against Dalton's ascitic lymphoma (DAL) in Swiss albino mice at the dose of 200 mg/kg. body weight In this study, drug treatment was given after the 24 hrs of inoculation, once daily for 14 days. 5 -fluorouracil (20 mg/kg) was used as standard drug. The albino mice were evaluated for Median Survival Time (MST), and cancer cell count, packed cell volume, hematological parameters was compared with the standard by collecting blood from retro orbital blood vessel of mice. The parameters were reduced in tumor induced mice. These observations suggest that both the extract MEUF and AEUF possess anticancer effect against Dalton's Ascitic Lymphoma (DAL)

BODY COMPOSITION MEASURES OF OVERWEIGHT AND OBESE ADULT FEMALES OF 20 - 24 YEARS AGE
    (2011) Kowsalya, S
In urban areas of India, Obesity is becoming an important public health problem. The rising prevalence of obesity and overweight is also related to the associated disorders like dyslipdemia, hypertension, type II diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases. Not many studies are available on the association between body composition measures and anthropometry among overweight and obese young adult females. Hence was the need for the present study. The study aimed at assessing the incidence of overweight and obesity among young adult females (20 - 24 years), determining the body composition and finding the association between body composition measures, anthropometry and energy balance. Around 400 young adults (20-24 years) from Coimbatore district were screened for overweight: obesity and underweight based on body mass index and forty five subjects, fifteen from each BMI category were chosen for the study. Their background information and life style pattern was recorded by an Interview schedule and nutritional status was assessed using the biochemical profile (blood profile, glucose, and lipid profile), clinical examination and diet survey. Body composition measures were done using Biospace Inbody - 720 - body composition analyzer using BIA principle. Results showed that all the body compositionparameters were found to be higher in obese subjects when compared to that of normal and overweight individuals. Visceral fat area was above normal in obese and fat free mass, total body water and protein were deficit in normal subjects. The study showed association between body composition, biochemical parameters, energy balance and anthropometry.

Development and Evaluation Of Nutritious Mix Incorporating Papaya
    (2011) Kowsalya, S
ugffik the second largest producer o f fruits and vegetables in yet the post-harvest losses seem to be 30 to 40 per ct0tliese types of losses could be diverted to produce the ancHsed foods rich in macro and micro nutrients to avoid undemutrilion. Papayas are available throughout the year, yet adf utility the processed foods are limited. Hence the study fiS undertaken with the broad objective o f d e v e lo p in g nutritious mix and extruded products based on locally available Ingredients with wheat flour as the base incorporating tiped papaya in dried form (2.5 to 10 per cent). Q u a lity characteristics, nutrient analysis and microbial lo a d were analysed for the best accepted products. The results o f quality characteristics reveaied that the wettabiiity, cooked weight, rthydratlon ratio and percentage water in rehydrated Increased after dry roasting of the best accepted extruded products in the raw form. The protein content of standard manual noodles (W.3g per WOg) was found to be better than the other accepted incorporations, the vitamin and mineral co n te n t of the incorporated products were superior to the s ta n d a rd "liui/uirfs. The to ta l in ic ro b ia i load was beiow t iio uiS tpecilieations. The cost o f the developed p ro d u c ts were iKonoinical than the commercial formulae.

Development and Nutritional Evaluation of Egg Shell Powder and its Nanoparticles
    (2015) Kowsalya, S
Egg shell waste is available in huge quantities from food processing, egg breaking and hatching industries. It is estimated that worldwide about 250,000 tonnes o f egg shell waste is produced annually. Development and characterization o f egg shell powder would result in additional benefit o f substantial and better physical, chemical and biological properties. Thus the aim o f the study was to develop and nutritionally evaluate egg shell powder and its nano particles. The egg shell nanoparticles were prepared by the method o f chemical precipitation using aqueous slurries o f egg shell bio-waste and treatment with phosphoric acid and ultrsonication. The developed nanoparticles were characterized by UV spectra, SEM, zeta potential and FTIR. Results revealed that the developed nano partic le size was 79. him and spherical in morphology. Zeta potential analysis revealed less stability o f egg shell nano particle. FTIR analysis showed significant peak o f egg shell particles at 1106cm and two absorbable peaks at 1197cm'’ and 912cm'’. Macro and micronutrient o f egg shell powder and its nanoparticles were similar. Hence egg shell powder and its nanoparticles may be considered as a natural, novel and potential source o f calcium supplementation. In depth studies are recommended to substantiate the results obtained in the study.
