Abstract
Major limb arnpulation is reported to be a major but pieveiitalrle public health
pi'oblem that is associated with protound economic, social and psychological
effects on tire patient and family. The pur pose ol this sttrdy was to outline
the patterns, iirdications atrd short term conrplications ol' major limb ampittations
and rehabilitatir^n. This is a study that was conducted at a voluntary
ceittr'e among the amputees fr'om 2010-2011 Eebruary 2010. All patierrts who
underwent major limb amputati(.>n were, after' itrfonned conserti for the stird),
enrolled into the study. Data were collected trsirtg a ciuestiortrtaire
A total of .500 patients were entered into the sttrdy. 'Hteir' ages rarrged betweerr

per cent respectively. Below knee amputation was the irrost cortrrnort procedure

ertvironment. The ntajority of these amputations are preventaitle by provisiott
of health education, early presentation and ap|)ropriate rnarragement of the
common indications. Mu.sculoskeletal pathologies often develop as secondary
complications in people with amputation, which may affect their ntobility and
quality of life. Prosthesis is a step ahead iit the life of ait amputee that would
allow patients to e.\perience some sensation of "feeling'’ again. Not only does
this make for a truly significant return to some level of normalcy, but it also
greally ini[)rovcs the iuiictionalily of replaceineiU devices. Wliile tlie effecl of
replacement prosthetics is to inif)rove quality of life for patients, the ultimate
goal is tile restoration of initial quality of life
