Abstract
The chemical composition of the essentia! oil obtained by hydrodistillation of the aerial parts of Aristolochia tagala was analysed using Gas Cromatography-Mass Spectrometry method. Thirty seven compounds in the oil were identified. The major components were the sesquiterpenes, namely, P-caryophyllene (13.8%), a-humulene (6.5%), gemiacrene-A (4.3%), bicyclogermacrene (4.2%) and car>'ophyllene oxide (3.9%). The oil showed moderate antibacterial activity against the tested Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
