They depend for their livelihood largely on crop and animal husbandry, fisheries, and Agro-forestry. In spite o f aU Government programmes in the area o f social safety nets, 26 crores o f people still live below poverty line. MGNREGA provides for the enhancement o f livelihood security o f the households in rural areas o f the country by providing at least one hundred days o f guaranteed wage employment in a year. The programme will have signilicant positive impact on seasonal rural-urban migration by providing rural workers with employment during lean season. This will reduce problem o f excessive population pressure in villages. Before MGNREGA, these tribal villages had no option but to move Ifom place to place during off-agricultural season. But with the employment Guarantee Scheme in place, they have a source o f livelihood during drought and lean season. This paper focuses on the impact o f MGNREGA on the enhancement o f economic and livelihood security among women.
