Abstract
Awar'eness o f the need to impleinent, maintain and improve a system o f occupational health and safety
(OHS) management has been initiated among worke7s employed in gaiirtent indusn‘ies located in Tirupitr,
India. The awareness prograrntrie corisisted o f two parts. In the fir s t part, public meeting was conducted in collaboration with Hon-
Covernrnenta I Organization (NGO- involving experts invarious field s o f occupational hea lth) twice in two consecutive y e a r s to crea te
a wareness f o r g a nnen t w orkers as well a s public In the second part, a\w reness p rogramrne fo r wo rkers v,'as o rganized in selected fiv e
g a rm en t industries by the investigator using d eveloped course content with the help o f resource persons specia liz ed in lab ou r laws,
physiotherapy, pulmonology, nutrition, y o g a and field publicity. Differer^t m ass media wer-e used in the awareness programme. The
impact o f the pi'ogramme was evaluated using a checklist which was administered before and a fte r the programme. The analysis o f
the checklist rev ea led that 80 p e r cent o f the participants g a in ed knowledge from a\\.xireness programme. Hence, there waj; a signific
am improvernerit in the knowledge o f the wor'kers after the awareness progryamme.
