Abstract
Bone health problems are a major cause of health concern with incidental rise of
osteoporosis. Bone mineral density, bone quality and the bone remodeling process are the
three most important parameters to maintain good bone health which defines an
individual’s susceptibility to skeletal diseases such as osteoporosis and osteopenia. The
prevalence of osteoporosis in India is predicted to rise to 36 million by 2013 with more
than 3 million osteoporotic fractures to happen by 2025. The objective of the research was
to study the pattern of Bone Mineral Density (BMD) among male and female osteoporotic
population. Three hundred and twelve (312) subjects were detected with osteoporosis by
determining their BMD using a DEXA scan from screening camps. The pattern of BMD
was assessed through the subject’s t-score ranges. Familial and medical history was
elicited. Results revealed that the incidence of osteoporosis was recorded highest among
the elderly population witihin the age range of 60-80 years (what is this exactly). Pattern of
BMD ranges revealed that women osteoporotics had lower BMD compared to men. Tscore
ranges between -2.5 to -5 were common. The presence of diabetes, hypertension and
other medical conditions were the associated risk factors for osteoporosis. Family history
of osteoporosis was seen among less than fifty per cent. Elderly with low BMD had
increased falls, fractures and surgeries.
