Abstract
Carbonized Areca catechu shell waste has been used as an adsorbent for the removal of
hexavalent chromium from aqueous solution. The optimum contact time for effective adsorption
of Cr (VI) from aqueous solution has been determined. The kinetics of the process of adsorption
of chromium onto activated carbon prepared from Areca catechu has been carried out using
Lagergren’s first order kinetic equation. The adsorption of Cr (VI) was found to be
concentration dependent. Conformation of data to the Lagergren’s rate equation indicates first
order kinetics for Cr (VI) removal by adsorption .
